List of Common Eye Issues and How to Treat Them

by admin

Close your eyes for a moment. Get up and move around. We bet it would take you minutes, if no seconds, to fall over. Why? It is difficult to survive without our eyes. When people with impaired vision learn to navigate using support aids, it is an amazing feat. This pair of eyes is a gift and a miracle from nature. Scientists have also discovered that when our eyes move, they have a 576-megapixel resolution. It’s mind-blowing to say the least.

Nevertheless, like any other part of the body, the eyes can also be affected by certain medical conditions. In severe cases, these conditions can be cured, but in many cases they become lifelong. Many of our health problems can be cured thanks to rapid advances in science.

Without our eyesight, survival would be difficult. This is why people should care for their eyesight and seek treatment immediately if they notice any problems. We have listed some of the most common eye issues and how to treat them.

Cataracts:

Cataracts is one of the commonest eye conditions. Each eye has a lens. The lens allows light to pass through and fall over the retina. This process helps us to see. Cloud formations can obscure the lens, preventing light from passing. People with cataracts are unable to see as they would if they had normal eyesight. It is not overnight that a cataract forms. The symptoms of a cataract appear gradually. For example, weakened vision or difficulty seeing at night are some examples.

In severe cases, even though cataracts can be treated with prescription glasses, brighter light, or antiglare lenses, this is not always the case. Surgery may be required if the cataract becomes worse.

Double eyelid:

Many of the eye problems we experience are not only related to our vision. They can be superficial, such as double eyelids. Double eyelids are more commonly cosmetic than medical, but this is not always the case. Double eyelids may be caused by a medical condition, such as Ptosis or Bell’s Palsy.

Uneven fat distribution is the most common cause of double eyelids. The condition worsens with age, and it is usually not a problem unless it becomes too noticeable. You can have a cosmetic procedure such as blepharoplasty if you think you need it.

Glaucoma:

Glaucoma can be inherited and usually begins to show symptoms in later life. The condition is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure, which builds up inside the eye. The optic nerve is damaged by this excessive pressure. The optic nerve in the eye transmits images to the brain. Glaucoma, which is characterized by constant pressure, can cause permanent vision loss. It is important to get regular checkups because it does not have any specific symptoms. Glaucoma can be treated by lasers, eye surgery or medication.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is often diagnosed in people with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. The retina is damaged. It has many small blood vessels all over the retina, which is made up of light-sensitive tissue. This condition damages the blood vessels in your eyes, leading to blurry vision, fluctuating vision, and dark spots.

The symptoms of the condition are not visible until the condition has gotten worse. Laser treatments are only effective if there is no retinal damage. Vitrectomy can help cure diabetic retinopathy in its early stages.

Dry Eyes syndrome:

Tear glands have a purpose. The glands produce tears that lubricate our eyes. Dry eye syndrome will result if our eyes are not lubricated. The symptoms are eye redness, itching, burning, sensitivity, etc.

There are several treatment options available for this problem. The most common is OTC medication. To cure dry eyes, you can get prescription medications or make lifestyle changes. Your optometrist will be able to guide you on how to treat your symptoms.

Macular Degeneration:

The macula is a crucial part of our eyes. It helps the eye to see in detail and recognize objects. The most common eye condition in the U.S. is macular degeneration.

Initial symptoms are not severe. In the later stages of the disease, sufferers may have difficulty seeing in low-light conditions, experience partial vision loss, or blurred vision. Macular degeneration, unfortunately, is an incurable condition. Prescription medicines and dietary supplements can only treat the symptoms.

Conclusion:

Our eyes are vital to our ability to see the world. A lack of good eyesight can seriously affect our daily functioning. It is important to have your eyes checked regularly in order to maintain good health. You should also seek the opinion of an optometrist if you notice signs of deteriorating vision. If you experience any of the above symptoms, it is important to seek professional help immediately.
